This is the promised video showing how differently my tatting looks.  Do you know anyone who does this as well?  It is from an EARLY book and I have been doing it this way for 30+ years!  Very fast as well.  The video is not the best but not bad.

There's another one or two videos on YouTube where the tatter tats like that. I believe it is the Reverse Riego method. One of my students could not get the hang of tatting the way I do but I noticed her hands tended to automatically go like yours so I sent her to the youtube video I'd seen and told her to practice THAT way. LOL! I've tried it that way but it's awkward for me after tatting another way for years. Nice video.

Thank you Gina! I think I found the reference in The Complete Book of Tatting, Jones. I saw it described as vertical versus the newer horizontal method seen more frequently. The reverse Riego is indeed what it is....makes me a very old lady but it works for me. I have tried the other method recently. I have mastered it pretty quickly but my hands feels better the old way.

I have seen someone else that like that, Arlene. It's not the way I learned, but we're both able to get the same results. Thanks for sharing your video!

Thanks for the video. It is very clear. I may have to try it. Your way looks easier on my hands.
I found a new to me (2008) instruction book at AC Moore. Learn to Tat by Janette Baker. It comes with an interactive dvd and the lessons are very clear and easy to follow. There are 9 lessons and then several projects.

I do not know that one...will have to see if I had it. Good luck with the book. I think I do find my "old-fashioned" way easier on my left elbow and hand. Since I was doing the newer to me method (as seen in most vid) I think my left inner elbow hurts more.

Maybe I will post another video of my Reverse Riego for other to see, variety is good!

Arlene, I don't tat like you do. However, I did begin tatting using a different way than a lot of other folks. I just couldn't get the hang of the flip, so I searched youtube and tried everything I could until I got it. The video that worked for me was

Since then, I have changed the way I tat to the way you'll see most folks demonstrate.

Your way does appear to be really efficient in the movements.

StephieJo,

I just watched video...not bad! I have seen this as well, I have never tried it though. Isn't it amazing how it can vary!

Hi Arlene! I tried learning to tat a few years ago and gave up. (using you tube) I tried needle and shuttle tatting. Couldn't do it. I did manage to make a little fish but it was frustrating. I can do it your way! It's still a bit fiddly but I'm getting there! Thank for posting your video.

BTW, I found you on ravelry in the she-knits group. I will be giving your podcast a listen!
